MIAMI
JUIETTAS
12 / 2019
Miami’s close relationship with water places many structures at risk due to sea level rise. Considering that development will not halt any time soon, it becomes increasingly important to create self-sufficient structures that can adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
Located right off the Julia Tuttle Causeway connecting mainland Miami with Miami beach, the Juliettas rise above an artificially created island. The complex consists of 3 buildings that together integrate residential and commercial programs that will service the islands community.
In order to maintain a sustainable balance at this scale a lattice with water cooling systems covers the glass structures. This same lattice also incorporates flexible solar collection fibers that generate power for the entire island. A large saline water conversion plant fuels these various systems. The combination of all the strategies creates a grid independent structure capable of monitoring and providing energy to all its residents.
Above all, the quality of living will remain exceptional. The island provides spaces such as private beaches, retail shops, restaurants, convenience stores and a greenhouse at every roof top. The Juliettas hope to set a precedent for sustainable development in Miami’s ever-expanding environment.
